These were made in front of students as I tried to refer to the issues that they were expected to encounter in a days drawing. I had to make them big so that students could see from the back of the studio.

 

The references are many and wide-ranging, art (of course), material factors (drawing tools etc), tactics they could employ to navigate the drawing, philosophy, football, food, politics, sensuality, gravity, ice skating, children’s work, animals, music or whatever I could say to stimulate an attitude of enquiry.

 

Some of the drawings were brought back to my studio so that I could have private moments redrawing and behave less moderately with them than I would in front of students.
